Photostock Pt. 2 – The M119

Agh, I’ve been remiss on posting more from the Photostock Event back in June of this year and for that I apologize, but things went straight down the tubes after photostock and I’ve been running at a million kilometers per hour since, and still haven’t stopped. But anyways I’ll get some more photostock up here over this week. Anyways onto the actual content.

The M119 is a unique roads, it’s clasified as a state highway but is far from it, a national historic senic route runs from just outside the village of Harbor Springs to Cross Village, at Photostock I took the oppurtunity to drive the length of the route and stop to grab photos along the way. This beautiful undivided senic highway runs along the edge of Lake Michigan and gives the passanger some amazing scenery to look at along with the driver a fantasic road to drive along. Just watch out for bikes, hikers, and on coming traffic. The M119′s nickname, “Tunnel of Trees” is well earned. Even on a bright sunny day at some points you will need to keep your sunglasses off and lights on.

The route is dotted with lookout points, homes, and cottages, three villages, even a cemetary. If you’re ever in the area, take hte time to give it a drive.

The Bridge

Hidden behind a hospital and a massive shopping mall a tiny road dead ends at a park. You can still see the old light standards continuing down. I had some time to kill on a Saturday afternoon so I decided to stop and check it out, having a camera with me I naturally brought it along for the hike.

The Middle Road Bridge

Down at the base of the road I was drawn out onto one the side trails that ran along a river bank, following it around I noticed something in the distance, it looked like a bridge, but not a bridge one would expect, it looked like an old road bridge.

The Middle Road Bridge

I moved in closer to said bridge, sticking to the river, it looked old, concret with stone pilings on either bank.

The Middle Road Bridge

The bridge was only a single lane, and happened to continue the road that I had followed initally, this was a bowstring truss (I remembered that from the Bridge project I had in Grade 5), and it was old, that much was clear, such details are not put onto most modern bridges, functionality before form eh? At least there was a plaque to date the bridge, 1909.

The Middle Road Bridge

Some research on The King’s Highway website pulls up the following. The bridge was part indeed built as a bowstring truss bridge in 1909, the first such bridge in Ontario, and the road I was walking on…was the Middle Road, yes, the road that in the 1930s was converted into Ontario’s first limited access freeway. The bridge however only served one year on the Middle road before the highway was realigned and a bigger (and less attractive) bridge was constructed.

Project:52 – Week 39

There are times when I look at my shots and think to myself, these photos are why I still shoot with film. It was the perfect day again (if only we could have had the weather a week later…but anyways). The sky was a brilliant blue, the weather was warm, it was the perfect day for a BBQ, friends, a beautiful setting, and of course ‘chrome film.

‘chrome film? Why, slide film of course, Fujichrome to be exact, Velvia. Delicious, Delicious Velvia. Fuji’s answer to Kodachrome, and E-6 process also.

So I found myself in beautiful Welland Ontario, I have to say I love small towns, and with the perfect weather and just a touch of fall coming out, I loaded up some of my beloved Velvia and got to shooting, both along the drive to Welland and at Mel and Bryan’s place who graciously hosted us.

End of the Line

So I’m weird (if you haven’t already guessed) and one of my more interesting goals is to drive in their entirty as many King’s Highways as I can. I have already done Hwy 7. But Hwy 6 I have been meaning to do for a while having done a vast majority of the Highway, but it was the section between Hamilton and Port Dover. So here it is, the town at the end of The King’s Highway Six, Port Dover.
