And the event had an excellent turnout, but it also was on a hot day- a dangerously hot day and I had to call it when we were barely halfway through the walk. Mostly because if we had gone further, it would have resulted in injury, maybe even my own. And since then, I’ve been wanting to follow the rest of the route. So it wasn’t until we were out of the heat of summer and into the fall before taking to the streets for the sequel(ish) to the anniversary walk. For this walk I brought along my Nikon F5 with the 28mm f/2.8 lens and a yellow filter. For film I took a couple of rolls of Kodak Tri-X 400 which I developed in BelliniFoto Hydrofen and my D750 with the 85mm f/1.8D lens for people photos and the 14mm f/2.8D for fun during the post-game areas. I also had in the bag my Maxxum 7 and the 20mm f/2.8 lens with a roll of Ferrania P33 for the Rodinal roll of that official review which I did use throughout the walk.

Nikon D750 – AF Nikkor 14mm 1:2.8D

Nikon F5 – AF Nikkor 28mm 1:2.8 (Yellow-12) – Kodak Tri-X 400 @ ASA-320 – BelliniFoto Hydrofen (1+39) 6:00 @ 20C

Nikon D750 – AF Nikkor 14mm 1:2.8D

Nikon F5 – AF Nikkor 28mm 1:2.8 (Yellow-12) – Kodak Tri-X 400 @ ASA-320 – BelliniFoto Hydrofen (1+39) 6:00 @ 20C

Nikon D750 – AF Nikkor 14mm 1:2.8D

Nikon F5 – AF Nikkor 28mm 1:2.8 (Yellow-12) – Kodak Tri-X 400 @ ASA-320 – BelliniFoto Hydrofen (1+39) 6:00 @ 20C

It was far colder than I expected and raining when I left home on Saturday morning. But looking southeast, where I was heading, the skies were clear, and the sun was just starting to peek over the horizon. The rain had pretty much finished up by the time I got to the Oakville GO Station. Having only been on trains during the week and later on Saturdays, it was nice to have a mostly empty car for the ride in. The crowds hit when I got into Union; the waterfront marathon was on, but it wasn’t anywhere near where we were going that day. Then I got on the Subway and took it up to Queen Street, where I started my walk. It was still cold when I exited the subway, but after loading up the cameras, I started out. With the light positioned the way it was, I had to stay on the shadowed side of the street, but as long as I kept moving, the temperature wasn’t too bad. The first third of my walk took me from Queen and Yonge through Moss and Regent Parks. Not exactly nice parts of the city, but it makes for an interesting walk to about Sakville, with lots of older commercial buildings in various states of repair. I also allowed myself some freedom to duck up some of the side streets if I saw something interesting. The streets were still pretty quiet at this point, so no one paid attention to me. Then it was up and over the Don River. There had been a fire in this area north of Queen, so I made another little detour to see if the ruins were still standing. A police officer met me, knew exactly what I was looking for, and told me it was nothing but rubble. If anything had been standing, he would have let me cross the line and take some photos. Then it was across at the meetup point about forty-five minutes early.

Nikon D750 – AF Nikkor 14mm 1:2.8D

Nikon F5 – AF Nikkor 28mm 1:2.8 (Yellow-12) – Kodak Tri-X 400 @ ASA-320 – BelliniFoto Hydrofen (1+39) 6:00 @ 20C

Nikon D750 – AF Nikkor 14mm 1:2.8D

Nikon F5 – AF Nikkor 28mm 1:2.8 (Yellow-12) – Kodak Tri-X 400 @ ASA-320 – BelliniFoto Hydrofen (1+39) 6:00 @ 20C

Nikon D750 – AF Nikkor 14mm 1:2.8D

Nikon F5 – AF Nikkor 28mm 1:2.8 (Yellow-12) – Kodak Tri-X 400 @ ASA-320 – BelliniFoto Hydrofen (1+39) 6:00 @ 20C

The meetup point was my big mistake. I failed to look closely at Blackbird Bakery’s Riverside location. It turned out it wasn’t a coffee shop, but a quick place to go in, grab something and get out. Seating consisted of three stools and a thin wall-mounted table, which was little more than a shelf. Nothing against the spot; the coffee and pastry were excellent, but it sure wasn’t designed for meetups. Either way, I wasn’t going to shift the location this late in the game; that only causes confusion. But I’ll bet that as the group grew, the locals and the staff were a bit confused by this largish group milling about. But true to my word (and probably to the relief of the staff), we left promptly at 11 am. The walk was roughly four kilometres, which was about an hour. But if wishes were horses…photo walks tend to move far slower than you anticipate. I also made no assumptions about keeping everyone together. Almost immediately, the group spread out; I started off at the head and ended up somewhere in the middle. Keeping an eye out in either direction, pausing at points to let the group gather closer before heading along again. By this point, the streets were humming with activities, people going out for breakfast, running morning errands. There is plenty to see through Riverside and even a small market on a corner. The light was beautiful, and the temperature was getting a bit more comfortable.

Nikon D750 – AF Nikkor 85mm 1:1.8D

Nikon F5 – AF Nikkor 28mm 1:2.8 (Yellow-12) – Kodak Tri-X 400 @ ASA-320 – BelliniFoto Hydrofen (1+39) 6:00 @ 20C

Nikon D750 – AF Nikkor 85mm 1:1.8D

Nikon F5 – AF Nikkor 28mm 1:2.8 (Yellow-12) – Kodak Tri-X 400 @ ASA-320 – BelliniFoto Hydrofen (1+39) 6:00 @ 20C

Nikon D750 – AF Nikkor 85mm 1:1.8D

Nikon F5 – AF Nikkor 28mm 1:2.8 (Yellow-12) – Kodak Tri-X 400 @ ASA-320 – BelliniFoto Hydrofen (1+39) 6:00 @ 20C

My original plan had been to take the group a bit south through Maple Leaf Forever Park, but already running a bit behind schedule and with the group probably spread out over a kilometre, I pushed straight through along Queen. It had been a while since I was last in this area, taking in the last ride of the CLRV and ALRV streetcars at the start of 2020 (before everything went nuts). I also got a good photo of the Ashbridge Estate. Many of the historic buildings around it had been torn down and replaced with modern buildings by then, so my photos were starting to get farther apart. We were also near the end of the route, and thankfully most of the people were getting closer together by the Russell Yard. Then it was up Coxwell for a lot further than I had expected, or I was just worn out by this point. Thankfully, we did make it to the end point, Godspeed Brewery, and settled in. They were still in full Oktoberfest mode, so I had a lovely Fest beer and some food. All of which were excellent, but I was so tired I decided that I wasn’t going to do any more walking that day unless I had to.

Nikon D750 – AF Nikkor 85mm 1:1.8D

Nikon F5 – AF Nikkor 28mm 1:2.8 (Yellow-12) – Kodak Tri-X 400 @ ASA-320 – BelliniFoto Hydrofen (1+39) 6:00 @ 20C

Nikon D750 – AF Nikkor 85mm 1:1.8D

Nikon F5 – AF Nikkor 28mm 1:2.8 (Yellow-12) – Kodak Tri-X 400 @ ASA-320 – BelliniFoto Hydrofen (1+39) 6:00 @ 20C

Nikon D750 – AF Nikkor 85mm 1:1.8D

Nikon F5 – AF Nikkor 28mm 1:2.8 (Yellow-12) – Kodak Tri-X 400 @ ASA-320 – BelliniFoto Hydrofen (1+39) 6:00 @ 20C

I had originally planned to walk a bit along Gerrard before hopping a streetcar across to Yonge, but my legs were tired and it was already a bit later than I had expected.
