There was a brief attempt to go with Sony E-Mount, but it never got very far. That one switch has always been from Minolta SR-Mount to Nikon F-Mount. Now I have since added systems like the Minolta A-Mount and Canon EF-Mount, but these have always been secondary. As I mentioned in a previous entry, the Nikon F80 is the camera that got me into the autofocus world of the Nikon F-Mount and eventually into the manual focus world of the F-Mount as well. Last month, I wrote about my entry into the digital world with the DiMAGE Z2, which only lasted about a year before meeting its end, falling off a roof. The Z2 would be replaced by a newer bridge camera, the Panasonic FZ-7, which didn’t last long because I had outgrown that system and needed something a bit more in line with my skills. Enter my first digital SLR, the Nikon D70s.

I don’t actually have a solo shot of the D70s, but here was my Nikon kit from 2008.

The Nikon D70s was my first new camera purchase, and at the time, the biggest purchase I had made in photography gear. And the best part is that the D70s I bought with my own money, I saved, I waited until the right camera came along at the right price that would work with the lenses that I already had with my F80 kit. The trouble is that those lenses were fixed on full frame; when they worked on the DX, the crop factor made the lenses worthwhile, but not as intended. So I knew I needed to get a proper DX lens to get that wide-angle option back, the widest lens I had at this point was a 24mm, so it would give an equivalent of a 36mm, not bad, but remember I shot a lot of abandoned buildings and liked the wide-angle view. I had planned to purchase the older D70, but the clerk at Henry’s in Oakville made me a deal so that I could get the D70s and the ‘enhanced’ kit lens, the AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm 1:3.5-4.5G DX, for only a slight increase in cost.

Nikon D70s – Tamron SP AF 11-18mm F/4.5-5.6 Di-II

Nikon D70s – AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm 1:3.5-4.5G DX

Nikon D70s – AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm 1:3.5-4.5G DX

Nikon D70s – AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm 1:3.5-4.5G DX

Nikon D70s – AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm 1:3.5-4.5G DX

Over the two years I used the D70s, I learned a lot more about photography, building on the foundational knowledge I gained with my previous cameras. Having that SLR format was like coming home to my older Minoltas and solidified me in the Nikon ecosystem. The D70s, like the cameras before, became a constant companion, and I now felt like a real photographer again. It came to PYPS events, where I got some great shots, and into abandoned buildings, where I could start to play with more compositions and styles. My lens kit grew as I invested in proper lenses designed for the DX format, including some ultra-wide options. My favourites included the Tamron 11-18mm and Sigma 10-20mm; sadly, in the process, I sold off some great full-frame glass to fund the purchases. I also started acting more professionally in my photography, holding myself to account for how I behaved, especially when photographing for money. And yes, I shot a few paid gigs on this camera. I also got into 19th-century reenacting and shot some of my first reenactment events with the camera, using long lenses for the first time. And the D70s stood up to all that, including being in the middle of a battle at my first Siege of Fort Erie event.

Nikon D70s – Tamron SP AF 11-18mm F/4.5-5.6 Di-II

Nikon D70s – Tamron SP AF 11-18mm F/4.5-5.6 Di-II

Nikon D70s – Tamron SP AF 11-18mm F/4.5-5.6 Di-II

Nikon D70s – Tamron SP AF 11-18mm F/4.5-5.6 Di-II

Nikon D70s – Tamron SP AF 11-18mm F/4.5-5.6 Di-II

I already had a good foundation in how exposure worked, so the D70s only improved on that with a better meter and display. But the D70s did more: this was the first camera I could shoot in RAW format, something I had never played with before. And all my earliest shots were done in JPG, at least until I got my hands on Adobe Lightroom. Lightroom gave me the chance to organise my work better, edit, and process it. It also taught me colour spaces, and that was learned through a mistake. I had started exploring RAW at the suggestion of another explorer and switched my camera to that mode before a big exploration meet in Buffalo, OPEX ’77, in 2007. Sadly, when I imported all my RAW files, I used a different colour space, and when I uploaded the shots to Flickr, the colours looked off. That’s because the colour space was designed for print work, not for display on a screen. It wasn’t until a year later that I fixed the mistake and switched to sRGB, which resulted in far better colours. I also learned how to use a flash properly, using an off-camera flash. While my earliest attempts used direct flash, resulting in hard light, a year on, I learned to bounce and defuse to give the images a kinder look. These were lessons that the D70s forced me to learn because I always wanted to improve my work.

Nikon D70s – AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm 1:4-5.6G

Nikon D70s – AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm 1:4-5.6G

Nikon D70s – AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm 1:4-5.6G

Nikon D70s – AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm 1:4-5.6G

Nikon D70s – AF Nikkor 85mm 1:1.8D

Compared to modern SLRs, the D70s is not the best, but it remains a competent camera today. You have a solid 6 megapixel CCD sensor, the F-Mount, full PSAM controls, all in a decent package. And for a camera aimed at the advanced amateur, the D70s packed a lot of features that could also be found in higher-end models. At this point, Nikon only used crop-sensors and had only released professional and semi-professional offerings, so the D70s worked perfectly with my skill set, and coming from that F80. The best part was that it worked with all my lenses, which at the time were almost all 2nd- and 3rd-generation AF lenses that required the camera body to have an AF motor. The only complaint I had with the D70s was the lack of weather sealing, but even then, I never had an issue using the camera in less-than-ideal conditions. It also suffered from similar digital noise in its cameras at higher ISO settings. And there was never an OEM battery grip released, and I had no desire to risk a third-party option.

Nikon D70s – Tamron SP AF 11-18mm F/4.5-5.6 Di-II

Nikon D70s – Sigma DC 18-50mm 1:2.8 EX MACRO

Nikon D70s – AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm 1:3.5-4.5G DX

Nikon D70s – Tamron SP AF 11-18mm F/4.5-5.6 Di-II

Nikon D70s – AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm 1:3.5-4.5G DX

I would have stuck with the D70s for longer if it hadn’t been for the chance to cash in some savings bonds that my Oma Oosthoek had set aside for me, which allowed me to jump onto the Nikon D300.
