And while for many years that spot has been my own downtown in Milton, Ontario. Another option would be Guelph, Ontario, but downtown has been getting a bit rough with folks living on the streets. Plus, the last time I was there, I found drug paraphernalia in the open. So I wanted to get out in early June and settled on another favourite, Dundas, Ontario. I first learned about Dundas during a Doors Open event, and then it fell away from my mind until the pandemic. Dundas presented something different: it was also close to home and quiet, both in ambient noise and in the number of people. I’ve hosted a couple of photo walks here and recorded a couple of videos here, which is what I was doing the day I finally added Dundas to my “On The Road” series. For gear, I had along my Nikon F65 with the 28-105mm lens and a roll of Fuji Acros 100 II, which I developed in Fuji Microfine and my D750 with the 28-70mm lens.

Nikon F65 – AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1:3.5-4.5D – Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100 II @ ASA-100 – Fujifilm Microfine (1+1) 13:30 @ 20C (Constant Rotation)

Nikon D750 – Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1:2.8

Nikon F65 – AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1:3.5-4.5D – Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100 II @ ASA-100 – Fujifilm Microfine (1+1) 13:30 @ 20C (Constant Rotation)

Nikon D750 – Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1:2.8

Nikon F65 – AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1:3.5-4.5D – Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100 II @ ASA-100 – Fujifilm Microfine (1+1) 13:30 @ 20C (Constant Rotation)

Nikon D750 – Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1:2.8

Archaeological records show that 10,000 years ago, long before European contact, the first humans settled in the rich valley in the shadow of the Niagara Escarpment. The woods, streams, and fertile soil made it ideal for human life and thriving. These first peoples were the ancient ancestors of the Attawandaron, who occupied the region at the time of their first contact with noted French Explorer Étienne Brûlé, who recorded in his journals that some 40,000 members of what the French called the Neutral Confederacy lived in the Burlington Bay area. The remainder of the Century would see the Attawandaron destroyed in the Beaver Wars, replaced by the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe. The area would see limited European settlement near the end of the 18th Century, with British Army Officer Captain Thomas Coote enjoying the marsh for fishing and hunting around 1787. The area was ceded to the British Crown under the terms of Treaty 3 in 1792. The goal of Lieutenant-Governor Sir John Graves Simcoe was to use the area as an anchor point for his military supply road from Burlington Bay to the Forks of the Thames, where Simcoe intended to build a new provincial capital (London). The earliest known depiction of the region came from Elizabeth Simcoe, who recorded some of the earliest accounts of Upper Canada. The Governor’s Road would begin construction in 1794, with a townsite surveyed along Spencer Creek, which would take the name Cootes Paradise. The small village became known for its ample water supply for milling, its soil, and its excellent agricultural potential, and a small settlement sprang up. In 1814, the village was renamed Dundas after Henry Dundas, the former Secretary of State for War and the Colonies, who had died three years earlier. The opening of the Desjardin Canal in 1832 saw the meteoric rise of the small village. Dundas became a hub of raw materials and manufactured goods by connecting the town to the growing trade across the Great Lakes. Quarried stone from the Escarpment, beer and spirits from the three breweries, cloth and furniture, steam engines from two foundries, and flour from two mills.

Nikon F65 – AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1:3.5-4.5D – Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100 II @ ASA-100 – Fujifilm Microfine (1+1) 13:30 @ 20C (Constant Rotation)

Nikon D750 – Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1:2.8

Nikon F65 – AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1:3.5-4.5D – Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100 II @ ASA-100 – Fujifilm Microfine (1+1) 13:30 @ 20C (Constant Rotation)

Nikon D750 – Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1:2.8

Nikon F65 – AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1:3.5-4.5D – Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100 II @ ASA-100 – Fujifilm Microfine (1+1) 13:30 @ 20C (Constant Rotation)

Nikon D750 – Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1:2.8

By 1846, the village had a population of 1,700, supported by six churches, six taverns, four schools, a post office, a bank, and a thriving commercial downtown. The town was incorporated in 1847, with the new town hall being completed in 1849. When the railway age started, Dundas seemed the ideal candidate for the rail yards for the Great Western Railway. Instead, through the machinations of Sir Allan McNabb, Hamilton would become the railway’s headquarters. While the Great Western Line did run through Dundas in 1853, it was not until 1864 that GWR completed a station for the town. While it seemed Hamilton eclipsed the Valley Town, Dundas was not out of the game, as it had a well-established and trusted industrial base. One of the town’s most prominent players, John Bertram & Sons, now a year old, established its reputation as a manufacturer of quality tools, many of which went into the factories that built rails and engines that drove Canada’s steam-driven industrial future. By 1869, with a population of 3,500, Dundas maintained a reputation as a central manufacturing town. The town took ownership of the ageing Desjardin Canal in 1877, and while they attempted to clean it up and make it a viable option, by the end of the Century, with regular railway service, navigation on the canal ceased. It became part of the broader efforts to clean up Cootes Paradise as a nature preserve that began in 1866. A small arts community sprang up in Dundas in the 1930s as students from the nearby, recently established McMaster University sought housing there. To limit further growth, the Dundas Valley Conservation Area, established in 1970, helped safeguard the area’s natural heritage, while in the town itself, the historical society began to preserve the community’s architectural heritage. Both efforts would limit the town’s growth, and while the former Bertram & Sons foundry closed up shop in the 1980s, the town clung to its history. In 2001, Dundas gave up independence and amalgamated with the City of Hamilton. Today, Dundas is a small, thriving community with artisanal manufacturing and a craft brewery, and a wealth of historic buildings and shops to explore.

Nikon F65 – AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1:3.5-4.5D – Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100 II @ ASA-100 – Fujifilm Microfine (1+1) 13:30 @ 20C (Constant Rotation)

Nikon D750 – Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1:2.8

Nikon F65 – AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1:3.5-4.5D – Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100 II @ ASA-100 – Fujifilm Microfine (1+1) 13:30 @ 20C (Constant Rotation)

Nikon D750 – Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1:2.8

Nikon F65 – AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1:3.5-4.5D – Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100 II @ ASA-100 – Fujifilm Microfine (1+1) 13:30 @ 20C (Constant Rotation)

Nikon D750 – Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1:2.8

The funny thing was that I had a route already planned out to walk a little bit more of the town than I normally do. But I don’t know what it was, a combination of a headache, that I was feeling a bit odd, or that I was supposed to do this photo walk on Thursday, but ended up doing it on Friday. For either reason, I ended up throwing that route out the window and taking a rather different one that had me explore many of the same areas I always do. It didn’t matter in the end, because I got in early enough that it wasn’t too hot outside yet, and I still had plenty of time to take my time. I started near Grace Valley Church, a beautiful 1870s sanctuary that was home to Knox and today is home to another Presbyterian Church connected to the Presbyterian Church in America. From there, I walked over to St. Augustine Parish, before going up Sydenham. A couple saw me with the cameras and mentioned that I should photograph up Sydenham towards the escarpment from King Street (I did later). Then it was backtracking along Victoria. Sadly, some of the houses I wanted to photograph had a lot of activity milling about outside. Then it was down towards King Street on Cross. The sun was not in the best position for some buildings, but in the perfect spot for others. Now, at this point, I cut down Main Street before ducking onto Hatt Street for a bit.

Nikon F65 – AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1:3.5-4.5D – Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100 II @ ASA-100 – Fujifilm Microfine (1+1) 13:30 @ 20C (Constant Rotation)

Nikon D750 – Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1:2.8

Nikon F65 – AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1:3.5-4.5D – Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100 II @ ASA-100 – Fujifilm Microfine (1+1) 13:30 @ 20C (Constant Rotation)

Nikon D750 – Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1:2.8

Nikon F65 – AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1:3.5-4.5D – Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100 II @ ASA-100 – Fujifilm Microfine (1+1) 13:30 @ 20C (Constant Rotation)

Nikon D750 – Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1:2.8

I don’t normally walk this part of Dundas; I usually end up at the brewery anyway, but taking a different route can be interesting. There were some interesting historic homes present, although most had been modified. Probably the highlights were getting closer to the historic core, with the Hayes Detail Shop and Dundas Valley Furniture. Of course, Shawn & Ed Brewing in a former curling rink turned bus depot, turned brewery. There are also former business sites, such as John Bertram & Sons, all of which have been converted into condos, as well as a dedicated arts school. Then it was turning onto Main Street to catch the former town hall, which pre-dates the Canadian Confederation. While it doesn’t serve as a town hall, the local councillor for Hamilton City Council maintains an office here. Then it followed Main Street up and finally cut across King Street. Now, if you’ve been to Dundas, you know that the commercial section of King Street offers a ton of amazing buildings, with a lot of mid-19th-century Victorian commercial architecture that is only rivalled by downtown Stratford. I ended my walk back at my car, yeah, a bit of backtracking at this point, but what could I do?

Nikon F65 – AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1:3.5-4.5D – Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100 II @ ASA-100 – Fujifilm Microfine (1+1) 13:30 @ 20C (Constant Rotation)

Nikon D750 – Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1:2.8

Nikon F65 – AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1:3.5-4.5D – Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100 II @ ASA-100 – Fujifilm Microfine (1+1) 13:30 @ 20C (Constant Rotation)

Nikon D750 – Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1:2.8

Nikon F65 – AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1:3.5-4.5D – Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100 II @ ASA-100 – Fujifilm Microfine (1+1) 13:30 @ 20C (Constant Rotation)

Nikon D750 – Sigma Zoom 28-70mm 1:2.8

Even though I have been to Dundas many times of late, I still keep coming back. There’s always something new to explore and a new route or direction to take. Like everything, every photo I take adds to the visual history of Dundas. It’s always worth going back, and it’s also an interesting bit of history because of what might have been. Would Hamilton have grown differently if the railway had been put in Dundas, or is the rise of Hamilton a fixed point in history and always inevitable? Something to think on, but anyway it was a great morning out in a favourite spot, and of course I had to grab some brews from Shawn & Ed before heading back home. You can check out all my photos from the day over on Flickr.

Sometimes you need an easy spot to take photos.
