The Darkroom: That Hipstamatic Look – Okay so as much as we hate to admit it phone based photography apps are here to stay, but the real question is where did Instamatic, Hipstamatic, and Vintique get their ideas for Lo-Fi filters to give off that vintage look. Well we swallowed hard and dug into this rather controversial topic. What can you do if you love the look but really want to shoot the original method…film!

Danger
Probably the first thing to look for is expired film, slide film and some C-41 films expire pretty badly, but if it’s your thing…
Rolleiflex 2.8F + Heavily Expired Kodak Ektachrome E100VS

Toronto - September 2011
Or you could try developing your E-6 film in C-41 chemistry for some more weird colour shifts.
Nikon FM2 – AI-S Nikkor 50mm 1:1.4 – Lomography XPro 100 (E-6 film developed in C-41 Chemistry

Rental Office
Can’t afford a Holga, how about a cheap box ‘snap shot camera’ from the 1950s or older?
Herco Imperial 620 Snapshot Camera – Kodak TMAX 400 – HC-110 Dil. M (1+250) 45:00

Red Scale - Don Valley
And of course finally there’s redscale, which is shooting through the film base, rather than direct onto the emulsion
Pentax K1000 – SMC Pentax A 28mm 1:2.8 – No-Name ASA-400 Film
