Let’s face facts, when it comes to film photography it isn’t exactly the best for the environment, between water use, packaging, and of course the chemistry there are some serious environmental impacts to consider. But what if there were some things we could do to help reduce our impact on the environment. Well today we have Darren, a blogger who writes for learnfilm.photography who has been working hard to investigate and put into place some helpful means to reduce our environmental impacts.

The former Photech plant in Rochester was my first hand experience with the hazards of photographic materials.

Here are some tips that were brought up during the show!

  • Bulk Roll Your Film – Not only do you reduce packaging you can reuse your film canisters which can be hard to recycle
  • Dispose of used chemistry properly – Almost all developers and fixers are toxic to the environment, while some developers are less toxic than others, fixer is the worst. Find your local hazardous waste disposal spot or film lab.
  • Caffenol – While it’s not always the best option, Caffenol is the least toxic developer out there.
  • Water Use – You don’t need to turn your water on full blast to wash your film, you also don’t need a long washing time. Another option is the Ilford Wash Method.
